Ever Mothered/Fathered Your Own Self? It’s Time That You Do It!!

The Gift (1)

Has it ever happened to you that you started creating a piece of Art, you had begun to follow a particular Technique and suddenly you have this urge to allow your brush strokes to add something to that Artwork, which looks like ‘not so fitting’ into that Technique but you still ‘feel good’ about it OR you’ve started filling up colors in the boxes and suddenly want all your color to spread beyond those outlines OR you’ve been doing a beautiful Artwork, following a reference Picture or a Guideline and suddenly you’ve this urge to create free flowing Abstract Art or put your ‘visions’ on the Canvas, OR you’re following a structured Project but have this one part of you wishing, “Oh..I wish I could go beyond these boundaries and bring more creative ideas into the system” and so on…?

If yes, then ever thought what part of you leads you to these thoughts?

Well, experience this Article fully to know what Part of you is that, which is seeking Attention!

This morning I picked up an Adult Coloring Book as one of my daily Meditative practices. I opened a random page and started coloring it. Before doing that, I closed my eyes and invited my “inner child” to join and have fun together.

This Inner Child is part of us since the time we are born and always stays with us. However, Life’s conditioning, stresses and traumas at times, end up suppressing this Inner Child and Adult takes over. It’s that part of us which is very playful by nature, is in its pure natural form but perhaps was made to behave as a responsible Adult during Childhood, because of Family Conditioning and many other factors. It is that part of us that had become too scared to express as it was constantly told to follow the rules or told that expressing ourselves is bad, Anger is bad or tears are bad. It was suppressed before it could fully bloom and we unknowingly allowed that to happen, until it started seeking attention by creating not so good patterns in our lives, in our work, in our relationships, with ourselves and alike..

How do we heal then? By working with our Inner Child, by being a Parent to it, by acknowledging its Presence, by communicating with it, by giving it a safe place inside our Heart where it’s fully allowed to bloom and open itself and discover and explore and express, by nurturing it. Without re-connecting with your inner child, it’s not possible to FULLY feel ‘Self-Love’..

With that thought in my mind, I invited that little part of me to join me and fill colors on that page. I asked it, “So which color do you want me to pick?” It answered, “Red and Green”.. I picked Red and Green colors and started coloring the Page. I dedicatedly started filling the lines and shapes very neatly so as to be careful not to let the color spill out of those lines as a part of me is so addicted to Perfection.

Here are those perfectly filled shapes:

However, I suddenly heard talking to myself, “Oh, this feels so boring, too structured, I want to break the symmetry, I want to choose different colors for the other side of the page and fill the ‘Fish’ with Red color instead of silver, I want to add dots to it, I want to make a Poker face of the  Fish….

I instantly paused.

For a moment, I was like, “Oh….who’s this talking to me?” and I realized it was that little inner child whom I had invited to become a part of this coloring fun. I closed my eyes and an image of me (from when I was 7-8  years old) flashed, and I started talking to that little me. The little ‘Me’, wanted to have more fun as it was always told to follow a structure and now it was getting too much for her to not to allow herself to explore.  She wanted to be more creative as that’s where she was feeling Joy, that’s where she felt safe and being able to fully express herself..

I let her BE!!

I instinctively started picking random colors and let myself put dots or hearts or whatever that little me wanted to create. I allowed myself to color the Fish a bit differently and let the color spill out of the shape and I started adding dots and other things “outside” the boundaries of those shapes.

Here’s the picture of little Me’s  “not-so-perfect” coloring bit. There are unusual colors being filled into shapes, coloring done not so perfectly or neatly, as I was now enjoying this ‘Imperfection’…this flow of Free Expression, this Joy…

This morning meditative coloring practice brought me an insight into how Expressive Arts Therapy can help us face, acknowledge and communicate with our inner conflicts, those different parts of us that are constantly seeking attention so that they are heard and the inner conflicts are beautifully resolved.

Do invite your Inner Child to paint, draw, create, color, dance, sing, cook…with you next time, when you decide to give time to yourself. Also notice, what conflicting thoughts come to Surface while you’re engaged in doing Art.

Happy nurturing yourself! 🙂

Love,

Preet 🙂

[Art That Connects]

For knowing more about how to deeply connect with yourself using Expressive Arts, please read my other blog posts.

A Conch Shell With A Flame

The Gift

An Art tour, at times, is enough to help you connect deeply to all your senses. Art is metaphorical to me, and perhaps, to many others as well. The thoughts that an Artwork, be it a Painting, a Photograph, triggers inside you, provides an insight into what you are feeling at that moment.

In Art Therapy world, it is also referred to as, “A Dialogue with the Image”, a dialogue that is uncensored, without any judgement and allows creating an instant relation with our inner self.

Not just creating a free flow Artwork, but also “watching” any Artwork can lead to this dialogue.

This is exactly what I felt recently, after visiting an Art Gallery and exploring an Art Exhibition titled, “Confluence”, an Exhibition depicting works of 24 artists from India and Bangladesh.

The Exhibition was majorly focused on showcasing works depicting various techniques of Printmaking, including Lithography, Aquatint, and Etching etc… I am not much of a technique oriented person, even though it adds to the aesthetics of an Artwork (as once mentioned by one of my Filmmaker friends). I instead connect deeply with the essence and emotion behind an Artwork.

What one could derive out of any Artwork, simply intrigues me.

Here’s a Journey of how my “Dialogue with the Image” went that day. It also gives an insight into using Art as a Therapeutic tool to deeply connect with yourself and see what your subconscious is trying to convey to you. The interpretation of any Artwork is highly subjective. This write-up takes you through my Interpretation and how I took it as a Metaphor to understand what was going at my subconscious level. This will further give you a direction for understanding your interpretations and their relationship with your deeper self.

Let me walk you through some of the Artworks from the Exhibition that I got pulled towards as if they were meaning something for me. At the end of it all, it connected so well for me. Read till the end of the blog to see how the inner connection got established.

The first Painting I got pulled towards was titled, ‘Freedom of a Puppet’. The title itself sounded like an Oxymoron.

1

At times, don’t we all feel like puppets…puppets of the situations, puppets of Life….but is it possible to become free? Well, yes it is…..It’s difficult to pull ourselves out of victim mode many a times, but it is possible… This Painting suddenly seemed so connected….so indicative of something deep, going inside me…

A Puppet, once free, shall stop being a Puppet…once it tastes the Elixir of Freedom, he can’t go back to staying like a lifeless Being, who’s being made to dance by someone else, staying at the receiving end of somebody else’s whims and fancies…..

The thought itself seemed scary yet beautiful… Scary, because Freedom involves an element of Uncertainty, which is unlike us putting our lives in the hands of others, where we feel certain that they’ll take care of everything.

This Freedom of a Puppet felt like an achievement as I moved to the next Painting titled, “Victory of a Puppet”, in the same series by the same artist.

2

Moving on, I stopped in front of another Painting titled, ‘Broken Boat’.

3

The Painting was already sold out as was marked by the ‘red dot’. However, something inside me wanted to simply run away from that Painting. No doubt or question on the Aesthetics and Beauty of that Painting, however, the feelings it triggered inside me made me aware of some dark side I was afraid of facing, some worry deep inside me. Awareness is the first step to healing anything. Hiding from it or denying it only delays the process.

Art becomes a trigger sometimes, an Anchor for emotions that needed getting addressed, or simply accepted and acknowledged.

The Boat in the Painting looked beautiful, the Color Composition was amazing, but that “broken” corner of the boat simply felt scary. It reminded me of something that needs mending….it made me feel incomplete and i walked away from that Artwork in a hurry.

“Expressive Arts Therapy” is about expressing through Art and being aware of our emotions…At times, I’ve done Paintings using dark colors, Paintings that i never looked at again as they triggered scary and harsh emotions inside me…However, simply pouring those emotions out on a Canvas made me become aware of those feelings and eventually release those.. So, win-win in a way..

The Artist behind “The Broken Boat” would have done it with his perspective, his vision and I fully admire and respect that. What I’ve mentioned here is my subjective interpretation of an Artwork and how it could work as a metaphor for our hidden emotions and feelings. Art IS beautiful…not just aesthetically but it also helps you heal!!

The next Painting that caught my attention was of a lit Conch Shell [a Shankh with a flame]. It instantly made me calm down as it signified HOPE to me!

4

I moved on, and instantly got pulled towards these 2 Paintings….all so vibrant and colourful..I just felt good after looking at those.. as I love whatever is vibrant and colourful.

5

These looked so calming to me…and I suddenly had an urge to pen down my thoughts and I exited the Gallery.

While I was writing this piece, I saw a connection, a deep meaning, a Metaphor “for myself” in all these mentioned paintings. To me, it seemed like a 3 staged process…To gain Freedom, mend certain things and thus end up making my Life much more vibrant, happier and colourful! Wow, the thought itself feels so delightful and hopeful, just like that “Conch Shell with a Flame” painting!!

This active Dialogue that i had made with these images and thus myself, instantly confirmed to me that I was on the right Path. I took it as a reaffirmation and it simply boosted up my Confidence and I’m excited to see how my Journey is enfolding.

Let’s wonder how you have an active Dialogue with any piece of Art whenever you see one next, and what does it enfold for you and your Journey.

The photos of the paintings listed here were taken in the Exhibition. The original paintings belong to the respected Artists. “Chor..Chor..Chor..Chor…..Chor..Chor…Chor”!!

Vihaan Blog

A random Facebook notification of an event with its highly inviting picture on the page catching my eye, was a beautiful coincidence that happened on a rainy Saturday (1st July), in Delhi.  The word ‘Haasya’ [laughter] caught my attention as i just wanted to literally die that day, die hard of laughing!! Who wouldn’t want to do that and that too over a weekend that’s meant to totally unwind yourself! Within moments, I got ready to make it to the event.

Sangeet Natak Academi opened its ‘Bharat Utsava‘ with the famous comic play ‘Hasyachoodamani‘, that’s directed by Sourabh Anant.

Making my way amidst the showers, I entered Meghdoot Theatre at Rabindra Bhavan, hoping to get seated in the first row as I relied on the Rain God to keep the footfall less…..AND I instantly decided to return.. the moment I stepped into the hall. The hall seemed to have a trail of people with everyone trying to spot a place to even stand! Call it sheer luck or a blessing that I was meant to watch this beautifully conceptualized, directed and well staged play. I just got the ‘perfect location to stand’ and I could watch it in full glory!

I instantly got hooked to it the moment the cast entered the stage and lovely music reached my ears. What else do you need a proof for, when you notice the audience humming along within a minute of the play having started!

So here we all went, “Chor, Chor, Chor, Chor…….Chor, Chor, Chor...”. Ah, sounds better than a song to me, already! 🙂 The gorgeous blend of lovely costumes, music, and the setup does want you to stay back and crave for more! Now what’s so special about it? That you’ve to ‘experience’! Just ‘be there’ when it happens next in your city!

The play ‘Hasyachoodamani‘ is based on a Sanskrit Satire written by Mahamatya Vatsraj in 11th century and dedicated to Natyashashtra. What a unique exposure of the commercialization of religion that happens in the society that’s full of ‘Chamatkaari babas‘. Translated in Hindi and adapted in Bundeli dialect, it’s a treat to the ears. It takes you to a highly interesting adventure of Comedy, Love, Music, Classical Narration and very interesting Visual Craft and effects. The whole stage looks so dreamy and poetic and truly an Inspiration even for the painters. Paintings can never be dissociated from other Art forms as one Art form inspires the other. The same reason also makes ‘Vihaan Drama Works‘ fully eligible to be chosen as the ‘Artist (Group) of the Month‘ for July, on my blog that covers Art, be it any form of Art, especially ‘Art that connects’!

Congratulations, team Vihaan!!

The play is a visual delight to watch, a treat for the ears to listen to and laughter riot for the LUNGS! Not a single moment in Meghdoot Theatre went without roaring applause and laughter. Such whistles and hooting were unheard for me in any play before. The whole cast was amazing, be it ‘Baba Gyanu‘ or ‘Kapatkeli‘ or ‘M-m-m-m-m-Madan-Sundari’ or any other character in the play. Sounds interesting already? Then go and watch it and meet this super versatile team of a highly talent group from Bhopal, Vihaan Drama Works.

A quick chat with Tejaswita, one of the team members and the woman behind the percussion in the play and also a dance instructor, helped me learn more about the group. This play was the group’s first ever performance in Delhi and voila! What a marvellous performance it was!! It must reach out to more people in Delhi. Vihaan Dramaworks, we do look forward to many more of your performances in Delhi!!

The group also conducts workshops on Theatre, Photography, Dance, Music and so much more. They have lots to offer to the Artist community and those who wish to become artists. The group had also been in news for organising VIFA [Vihaan International Festival of Arts], where artists from across the country were brought together focusing on several art forms. Their Theatre workshops also focus on sessions on Rang Sangeet under the guidance of Theatre Artist Hemant Deolekar and team.

I was so hooked onto the play that I totally forgot to click pictures, so sharing a few that I got from Ministry of Culture, Government of India page and few others on the web.

Here are some bits from this all-senses treat (all credits for the photos go to various photographers who clicked and shared these with public)

AMIT VARDHAN: The man who taught me the ‘Sign Language of Love’!

aRTIST of the month Amit

Congratulations Amit Vardhan, for being featured as the ‘Artist of the Month‘ for June, 2017!!

SPEECH doesn’t become a barrier when you’re blessed with a talent that is creative, colorful, beautiful and connects people. You can surpass any hurdle and inspire others! That is precisely, what Amit  personifies. He is the man who taught me the ‘Sign Language of Love’!

Language of love

Since my first interaction with Amit in August 2016, I had been curious to know more about him and see more of his artwork.

Last year, I was busy sharing stories about my own Artwork in my stall, where I had exhibited my work and suddenly I saw Amit waving a hand at me. I smiled and said, ‘Hi’. He smiled back. He suddenly made a sweet gesture using his hands, complimenting me on my artwork, not just once but multiple times. Then he held my hand and gestured to walk with him to his stall, which was 2 blocks away from where my Exhibition was held.

I looked around and saw lot of goodies like notebooks, handbags etc. in his stall and to be honest, at that moment my first thought was, ‘oh…ok…nothing special about it, these are just notebooks’….but the moment Amit proudly pointed (with a huge smile on his face) towards the lovely illustrations done by him on each of those goodies, I could only fell in awe of his lovely talent. He tops it with a huge curve on his lips each time you see him. I still own one of his works, that he had gifted me during my first Exhibition. He calls that work as ‘Freedom’! Thank you, Amit!

I had always been curious about how Artists share their work and whether everyone gets it easy? Last month, I ended up meeting Amit again, at Oxford Bookstore, in Connaught Place, Delhi. I wanted to grab some nice tea at Cha Bar and saw Amit waving at me from his stall. I invited him to join me for a cup of tea, which he very willingly accepted.

Few moments went by in Silence….as I was at a loss thinking how to start the conversation because I didn’t know the Sign Language but I was suddenly touched by the way Amit instantly made me feel comfortable by ‘writing his answer on a paper napkin‘ after I gestured asking him, “How are you doing, Amit?”.

I suddenly felt at ease and then we both could only smile while looking at the Cha Bar guys who were staring at both of us for ‘wasting their paper napkins’, but who knows that we were only enjoying our conversation and creating memories! 🙂

tissue papers and speech

After our regular chit-chat, Amit started telling me about his experience at his stall and I had this sudden instinct to share more about such wonderful talent with the rest of the world, and hence this post.. that was long due.

Me: “Amit, what do you enjoy drawing/painting/sketching more?

Amit: “Abstract, Nature, Live sketches”… (as he writes his reply on the paper napkin)

Me: “I still remember the ‘Freedom’ artwork that you had done for me and gifted me last year. Do you?

Amit: “Yes, Yes!!“.. (with a huge smile)

Me: “Do you keep meeting new people here? Have you made any good friends?”

Amit: “Yes, I have but these days I get very bored.”

Me: “Why so?”

Amit: “People hardly visit the bookstore as vacations are going on and summers are here. Sales have also dropped for the same reasons. Feels like a long day.”

Me: “Amit, you are so good at painting. Why don’t do you start painting here itself while you have ample free time at your stall as you mentioned! This way you won’t get bored and who knows someone might love your paintings and even buy those!”

Amit: “Yes, yes. That’s a good idea! Thank you so much!

And then we continued with our chat over a few cups of tea before I took his permission to write about him on my blog, to which he very willingly agreed and also allowed me to click his pictures.

Live Sketch by Amit

I returned home highly motivated with a decision of telling more people about Amit’s talent and a wish that his work gets noticed even more. So here’s my little attempt towards it.

Amit is associated with Atulyakala as a Visual Artist. He has also been a part of the The Goodwill Project of Atulyakala.

Learn..How to Unmask Emotions Using Art

UnMask emotions using art (2)

Creativity is a combination of discipline and a childlike spirit. ~ Robert Greene

FOLLOW THESE STEPS:

1. Pick a pen and paper.

2. Take a deep breath and loosen up your hands. The idea is to allow free movement of your hand and let it take charge. When your hand starts to move freely, you’ll notice that the chatter of your mind is going away and you start to enjoy the free movement of hand on paper.

3. Without lifting the pen, start drawing lines on paper. Straight or curved, as it comes. Let shapes evolve on their own. This’ll create an Outline for what you’ll follow next. Here is an example:basic outline4. Once this Outline is ready, pick any of the sections and start filling it with whatever comes to you. It could be simple shapes like circles, lines or floral patterns or anything else. If you get an urge to simply fill in the section with shading, go for it! . Focus only on drawing, at this moment. Repeat it for all the sections. This is how i ended up doing it:fill section5. Allow mistakes and create something out of those. For instance, if you notice a line crossing the boundary of that section or color getting smudged over or something not looking right to you, just allow it to BE! Continue from there. In the picture below, notice how a line is crossing into the other section and how i continued from there and a new pattern emerged without me erasing the line. That is the whole beauty of this technique!mmistakes

4. Start filling other sections in the same manner and stop only when you feel like. Fill in space if you want. You might want to complete this in one go or do it as and when you want. The idea is to enjoy the whole exercise while you continue to recognize its benefits. At times, I allow my inner self to take over and i pick the same piece of work for a few minutes each morning. With the following Artwork, i reached that sense of completion after about 3 weeks of starting it. [More on what COMPLETION signifies here, in my upcoming articles. So keep following.]fill inside the patterns5. Once you feel that it’s completed, SLEEP OVER IT, literally! Whenever you pick it up again, just sit back and observe it. Notice what it conveys to you. There is usually a pattern that your inner self conveys to you through this therapeutic form of self-expression. Those patterns continue to emerge when you repeat this whole exercise multiple times as your inner emotions continue to out-pour on paper, layer after layer.

Witholding “manifests” itself in an “outpouring” that is the giving of a gift”. Mark C.Taylor

You’ll notice something common in the artworks that you come up with post this exercise. I did this exercise a couple of times (including once on a Canvas) recently and noticed a common pattern that to me, looked like a MASK. In my following artworks (some have still not reaced that completion stage for me), you’ll notice a Mask like pattern.

Do it and see what your inner self conveys to you. After a busy day at work, you’ll find doing it even more relaxing and calming.

(More techniques on analyzing these patterns..in my upcoming articles).

Do share your lovely experiences after completing this exercise. Post your outcome in the comments if you wish.

With Love,  Preet 🙂
